ProjeKct X is playing on the Thinkpad's Playstation.
A Fed-Ex package containing a CD of ProjeKct X, plus a fax of a proposed Japanese tour for KC in October, are awaiting downstairs. David Singleton is in the hotel - he woke up to look out his window and see a construction site - and we'll meet in the diner.
This morning: catching up on BTV developments with David Singleton, in from Seattle in a state of severe psyche dribble. David's severely depressing hotel room has been changed: we moved him into my last room. I am now in the privileged position of having a suite immediately below him. The suite is courtesy of the NY Expo: they are hoping my keynote address tomorrow justifies it.
Then to Vidal Sassoon's. I tried to negotiate a pro rata discount for David - he suggested paying by operative follicle - but they wouldn't have any of it. Then to coffee with Tony Geballe at Starbucks a block away from the hotel. Then to e-frenzy & guitar practice. Now to diarism.
Yo! Adrian burning over a Soundscape & Gunn-Mastelotto rhythm track.
David calls down to see if I'm on permanent BTV call, and can we go to Seattle on Monday (instead of returning to England)? This isn't definite yet, but the answer is yes.
News announcement: this is drawn from conferring with the other Big Two of DGM today (although David is technically no longer a DGM person, but employed by BTV). DGM will be releasing 2 new CDs - ProjeKct X, and a single volume overview & introduction to the Collectors' Club - by mail order and at KC shows. Obviously, we're aiming to have these ready for the end of May. I'm sure very few audients interested in Crim, particularly in Europe, have ever heard of the Club.
Response to a DGM Diary: that of the Sidney Smith for 31st. January where a friend of Sid's wonders why "Healthy Colours" on The Essential Fripp & Eno?
The intention was to provide a bonus track/s from our time in New York. The possible third F&E never happened but, I believe, there were tapes circulating of this (as with a Fripp guitar part from a "Bush Of Ghosts" session which was never included on the album). I did not intend for the track/s to be considered as part of the album proper: they were included as a rarity for collectors.
Response to the Guestbook:
Enrique Ocasio enquires (DGM Guestbook 25th. February) whether we are aware of the developments in Congress regarding phonographic copyrights. The quick answer is, painfully yes. Interested visitors might care to go to http://www.eff.org/~barlow/ and use their initiative in moving further. Or visiting the New York Expo over the weekend. Or watching it online.
Yow! Yow! "Demolition" is blasting away. This was the improv which we took as the basis for "Oyster Kitchen Museum Floor Wax Life Soup". ProjeKct X is to Crimson as Mr. Hyde was to Dr. Jekyll. Blast! Pow! Wern!
And now: a new bio for King Crimson. When a group makes an album, and a record company seeks to make its potential public aware of this, a bio is needed. Would RF write one? This is what I sent off yesterday:
King Crimson 2000King Crimson is older and smaller, and continues to reinvent its wheel. When a new wheel appears, we stand back and look at it: we have a wheel.
So, perhaps King Crimson isn't getting any wiser.
The present incarnation is a Double Duo and/or a Quartet. It is also four soloists, four trios and six duettists. Whether or not these varying and various components burst into song, a celebration and affirmation of our life and musicKing together, depends upon a number of conditions being present and available:
Firstly, that the group wishes to do so.
Secondly, that the audience allows this to be.
enthusiasm.
I assume the group wishes to be.
So, why might the audience not allow this? Perhaps:
A love of history.
A lack of familiarity with our present repertoire.
A demand to fetishize and imprison the event within the contraints of photography, autography and recording.
How might the music industry bound our enthusiasm? Perhaps by:
Emphasizing product rather than process.
Accepting standard practice as the best available.
Directing our energies away from musicKing.
Rehearsals begin in Nashville on May 1st. 2000 followed by three play-in performances at 12th. & Porter in Nashville on 19, 20 & 21st. May. The aim of these is to catalyze the group's performance through exposure to public ridicule.
King Crimson begin their European tour in Copenhagen on 27th. May and plan to perform in Japan and the US later in the year.
